Dont we have the Gold Glove awards for that? If I'm following your logic correctly here, the League MVP should be judged based off all three awards. Or while we are creating new awards, how about the Ozzie Smith Award for best overall defender? THEN choose the MVP from those three, give the great defenders a chance to win without having to be a premier hitter. But is it fair to not include relief pitchers? So maybe the Rolaids Relief Award, renamed the Hoffman Award, could be the fourth...Adam Silfvennoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5064547517730087223.post-10739641119228936722011-09-08T23:15:50.133-05:002011-09-08T23:15:50.133-05:00ARR -- Rick Ankiel's a good one, but if it'...ARR -- Rick Ankiel's a good one, but if it's between him and Smoky Joe Wood, then I think the answer is obvious on awesome-name grounds alone.

Theo -- Good question. I think the timing would be that MVP would come after Mays and Young results were already in. The pool of players eligible to be elected the winner would be the four winners of those awards plus any player who switched leagues mid-season.

Now, that's obviously going to let in a lot of silly candidates. This year, Kevin Kouzmanoff would be on the ballot, for instance. But I would hope that the voters (who those are is something I didn't address -- I guess I just have to leave it up to the BBWAA again) would be able to focus on the task at hand and not get distracted by the shiny Kouzmanoffs, Mark Ellises, and Brad Zieglers of the world. Otherwise, I have the feeling that we'd get a whole host of new headaches. For example, if you limit it to those four choices, you're cutting players who changed teams mid-season. But, if you don't limit it, you'll get writers trying to draw attention to themselves by saying "just because I didn't pick him for a Willie Mays or Cy Young Award doesn't mean he can't be my MVP pick". Either way, it seems like we're just getting new issues.Theohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07356047156527558873noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5064547517730087223.post-16645501663491810012011-09-08T15:35:16.244-05:002011-09-08T15:35:16.244-05:00I still don't see why this shouldn't be ca...I still don't see why this shouldn't be called the Rick Ankiel AwardARRhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12955144407388625449noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5064547517730087223.post-85468711144005578432011-09-08T14:20:54.878-05:002011-09-08T14:20:54.878-05:00The Baseball Bloggers Alliance (which, of course, ...The Baseball Bloggers Alliance (which, of course, this blog is a member of) already has a Willie Mays Award for top rookie in each league.
