He was still pitching, but it didnt look he was anywhere near the pitcher he use to be (even though his Ks were still sort of there).

Thanks for reading and commenting!h2h Cornerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01158171043246018163noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5064547517730087223.post-31470150294278494102011-12-13T11:48:37.008-06:002011-12-13T11:48:37.008-06:00Great article! In your research though, you forgot to account for the 1994-1995 strike which definitely impacted Gullickson and Jack Morris' innning totoals for 1994 and to a much lesser extent, Viola. All of them were basically shot at that point regardless. However, Doug Drabek's warning signs related to innings were not as pronounced as you suggest. He was still averaging almost 6.5 innings per start over those 2 seasons (although he was much less effective in 95' than 94').Mike Bhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08428885437542300629noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5064547517730087223.post-68362445372480479912011-12-12T07:40:40.476-06:002011-12-12T07:40:40.476-06:00Good work Albert. Although I think Buehrle would have been a better fit in DC, he does eat up the innings, and does not mess around on the mound. With the pourous defesne of the Whiote Sox, I am surprised he did not give up more unearned runs. Luis Tiant, Billy Pierce and Nolan Ryan all did well in their later years.afegenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5064547517730087223.post-24463697055835887202011-12-09T15:26:49.934-06:002011-12-09T15:26:49.934-06:00you had me at "click to embiggen"...you had me at "click to embiggen"...Stevo-samahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09381563924108376599noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5064547517730087223.post-60472940511636982072011-12-09T12:27:25.224-06:002011-12-09T12:27:25.224-06:00Thanks for the comment, William.
Whitey Ford isnt ...Thanks for the comment, William.
Whitey Ford isnt unlike Buehrle, as you note. from 1950-1961 (21-32 yrsd old), Ford threw 2,037.1 innings with a 2.77 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 1.47 K:BB rate. His ERA+ during that time was 134. That said, while they aren’t unalike, I think Ford was a good bit better than Buehrle after his age 32 season. His ERA+ was 14 points higher and he was fresh off a CY Young season in which he pitched 283 innings. The majority of Ford’s best seasons were after he turned 33. I thik Buehrle is a bit removed from his best years. Certainly, it paints a far better picture and I’m happy you came up with him. It’s a pretty close comp!
I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that Buehrle has been better than Glavine at this point in their respective careers. From 1987-1998 (21-32), Glavine pitched 2,425.2 innings with a 3.31 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 1.86 K:BB rate. His ERA+ was 122. However, like Ford, Glavine was coming off a CY Young season and appeared to be at his peak. That said, over his next four seasons, he was worth 14.3 WAR (baseball reference) and averaged a 3.52 ERA, 230 innings, a 1.34 WHIP and 1.65 K:BB rate. If Buehrle lives up to this, he will be decidedly worth his contract.h2h Cornerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01158171043246018163noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5064547517730087223.post-87969967223646702012011-12-09T11:31:43.126-06:002011-12-09T11:31:43.126-06:00Enjoyed the post a lot. He was an All-star, Cy Young winner and MVP.

After turning 33, he pitched just three more years, unfortunately (1983, 1985 and 1986). During that span, he averaged 124 innings a year with a 4.32 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and
1.33 K:BB rate.

He was leaps and bounds better than Buehrle early in his career. The Marlins better hope Buehrle is leaps and bounds better late in his career than Blue was.h2h Cornerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01158171043246018163noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5064547517730087223.post-72163227638806306252011-12-09T10:02:16.077-06:002011-12-09T10:02:16.077-06:00This comment has been removed by the author.h2h Cornerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01158171043246018163noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5064547517730087223.post-19750736420353635962011-12-09T09:54:30.830-06:002011-12-09T09:54:30.830-06:00Frank Viola...takes me back to the halcyon days of...Frank Viola...takes me back to the halcyon days of my youth.
